Australian Citizenship by Conferral

Australian Citizenship by Descent

Australian Citizenship by Descent is available if at least one of your parents was an Australian citizen at the time of your birth. Enjoy the same rights as any other citizen, including voting and obtaining an Australian passport. There are two pathways:

  • 1. General Eligibility: Born outside Australia on or after 26 January 1949, with at least one parent being an Australian citizen. If the parent was a citizen by descent, they must have spent at least two years in Australia.
  • 2. Pre-1949 Birth: Born outside Australia or New Guinea before 26 January 1949, with at least one parent becoming an Australian citizen on that date. The parent must have been born in Australia or New Guinea or naturalized in Australia before your birth.
Application Process: We will assist with your application and required documents. Evidence of your parent’s citizenship status is necessary. If you’re 18 or older, you must be of good character. Upon approval by the Department of Home Affairs, you’ll become an Australian citizen by descent and can apply for an Australian passport.
Note: No citizenship test or ceremony is required for applicants of Australian citizenship by descent.
